Forks are chess tactics where you attack two enemy pieces at once, using just one of your pieces. The best piece to use is a Knight Fork, where the Knight attacks two pieces at once. Many Queens have been lost due to Knight forks.

However, the Knight is not the only piece. Queen forks can be deadly. Pawn forks are simple and very common. Rook and Bishop forks are less common, but are effective. Even King forks are possible, usually in the endgame.

Forks are one of the 3 basic types of 2-move combinations: pins, forks, and skewers. Beginners improve their play greatly as they gradually master these chess tactics.
