Return Sacrificed Material
The return of sacrificed material is a very basic defensive strategy against sacrifices. If an attacker launches an attack by sacrificing a pawn, or even a piece, then the defender has extra material. It might seem that the defenderís best option is to keep this extra material, and certainly that is the attitude of most beginners.
But thereís often an advantage for the defender to simply return some or all of the material. Often an attack can be neutralized by returning the material. And if an attack fizzles, the attacking player is often left much worse in the center and other side of the board. Returning material in order to get an active and strong position in the center is often a safer way to win by counter-attack, rather than trying to hang onto the extra material and doggedly defend.
