Queening square

The Queening square for a pawn is the very last square of its file. This is the square where it will become a Queen.

The Queening square is important in determining whether a passed pawn can be stopped. The “rule of the square” is helpful in determining if a King can reach the pawn’s Queening square in time. The more general technique is “counting” how many moves for a King (or other piece) to reach the Queening square.
