Closed positions are chess positions where there are many interlocking pawn chains, leading to a blocked pawn structure. Usually a closed position overall refers to a “closed center” in particular.
A typical closed position has a very locked up central layout, but may have open files on the flanks. In fact, it is typical in such closed positions that the center remains closed and that play happens down one or both flanks.
