Castle Opposite Side to Attack

Castling on the opposite side of the board to your opponent often leads to an exciting attacking game. If you want a more boring, positional game then castle on the same side as your opponent.

The reason that opposite castling leads to attack is that both players can launch pawn storms against the enemy king without weakening their own king. So you often get a huge attacking race, with both players rushing to attack on the opposite sides. There are often sacrifices. In these games, it is often said that “whoever is the most generous is likely to win”, and this is meant with sarcasm. What it means is that whoever succeeds in launching the most sacrifices (generously giving pieces) against the enemy king will win. So, not really that generous.
