Block Checks

Beginners will often try to respond to a check by moving the King. It is often better to block the check with a piece or pawn. This is especially true of a check when your King is in the middle. Better to block it with a piece, and then you still have the right to castle. Move the King, and the right to castle is lost. (But you cannot castle out of check.)

Blocking a check is not always the best move, however. Any piece that you use to block a check immediately becomes a pinned piece. And pinned pieces are sometimes captured by the enemy.
