Total Piece Value in Chess

The total value of all the chess pieces can be calculated using the measures of material. At the start of the game, each player has 16 pieces: 8 pawns, 2 Rooks, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops, 1 Queen, and 1 King. The total value of each set of pieces can be calculated using material values:

So the total value in material of each army is 8 pawns + 9 pawns (Queen) + 2x5=10 (Rooks) + 2x3=6 (Knights) + 2x3=6 (Bishops). This gives us a total of 8+9+10+6+6=39 pawns.
