King Backwards Moves
Can the King move backwards in chess? Yes, the King can always move backwards or forwards (and sideways or diagonally), one square at a time, as many times in either direction. Kings can move in 8 possible directions, as much as desired, without restriction. The King can move vertically backwards or diagonally backwards, but only one square in all cases. The only piece in chess that cannot move backwards in chess is the pawns.
