Can the King move forwards?

Yes, the King is allowed to move forwards, but slowly. The King can only move one square at a time, but it can slowly make its way forwards all the way to the other end of the board, if you like (there’s no special benefit to getting to the last rank, though).

Kings can also move backwards. They can go forwards and backwards as often as desired. The only issue is that a King move loses the right to castle (see: castling rights).
