The Topalov Variation arises in the Queen Pawn Games. It usually occurs for Black when White chooses “Queen Pawn delayed c4” lines. The simplest such position is: “1.d4 Nf6, 2.Nf3”, where by avoiding “2.c4”, White has avoided many of the main-line Indian Defences (See: Anti-Indian Variations).

This line is regarded as quite sound, and also quite tactical and aggressive. Black gets a headstart on the queenside expansion, which usually starts later in the Benoni.
