The Staunton Gambit is a gambit line for White against the Dutch Defence (1.d4 f5). White plays “2.e4!?” offering a free “e” pawn to Black. The gambit has a fairly good reputation but is probably not completely sound, and is not often seen at grandmaster level.

Transpositions: The Staunton Gambit may transpose into a Balogh’s Defence, should Black choose to play “2..d6” (declining the gambit). Balogh’s Defence is widely regarded as highly dubious, but is actually playable for Black.
