The Petrov Defence, or Petroff Defence, is a well-respected Black defence in the King Pawn Openings. It is used to avoid lines such as the Ruy Lopez or Giuoco Piano. The Petrov Defence itself has the reputation as being a “drawish opening” in that it often has balanced equal positions without clear tactical play or positional plans. But below the chess master level, there is still plenty of opportunity to win (or lose) with this opening.
