Pelikan Sicilian

The Pelikan variation of the Sicilian is a move with Black playing “e5” after having both Knights out. It is a highly tactical and trappy opening where Black accepts static pawn weaknesses in return for tactical piece play. It is not very popular in grandmaster play, but is quite successful at the club level.

The Pelikan is also closely related to the Lowenthal Defence in the Sicilian, which also involves the “e5” advance a move earlier, and has similar pawn formations in many lines.
