The Latvian Gambit, also called just “the Latvian”, is a Black gambit in the “e4 e5” lines. It is also called the “Greco Counter-Gambit”. It is generally regarded as suspect for Black amongst master play, but it can be dangerous, and has useful surprise value at club level.

The Latvian Gambit occurs reasonably often in lower-level club play, but rarely in master play. It is a dynamic and dangerous opening, where White must be careful. But a White player who knows the theoretical lines can achieve a good position against Black in this opening, so it doesn’t work well against stronger players.
