The c3 Sicilian is where White avoids all the d4 lines by playing 2.c3 immediately. Its also called the Alapin Sicilian or the Sveshnikov Sicilian. Over the last few years, this has become such a popular opening for White that it has largely lost any surprise value, with Sicilian players well prepared for this line. Although many lines are tactical, stronger players often find Black lines that defuse the fire and it can often end up in a slower endgame, in some lines anyway.

White might also considered the idea of a Deferred c3 Sicilian. White can wait a move or two before playing c3.
